Detoxification

Detoxification (detox) is clearing alcohol or other drugs from a person's body. It's often done under medical care. Medicines may be used to treat symptoms and prevent complications, such as seizures.

Detox works best when it takes place in a setting like a hospital. But it may also be done in an outpatient setting. This depends on the severity of the person's physical dependence, what substance the person used, and other medical problems. It usually includes mental health counseling with medical monitoring, supervision, and support.
